101 BED COLLECTION

NARRATION 

July 2002 

1.         WATERBED

             Riding the frothy blue waves on an inflatable mattress.  Open the spigots, turn on the faucet and float into a      Freudian watery-world of dreams

 2.         ALPHABED

            From A-Z, on monogrammed sheets, happiness is .….

 3.         BEDFRAME

In French, "cadre" means frame as well as context. At the height of the French Empire, Napoleon established green as the royal color, framed in gold, and richly embroidered

4.         BEDOUIN

A dream of Arabian nights, a fringed sway of Fatima’s skirts under the crescent moon, guided by the magic hand of "Inshala" - when belly dancing goes horizontal

5.         BED OF ROSES

Synonym of life at its finest, it is a gardening at its most beautiful, pungent and thorniest

6          BED BOUND

The Marquis de Sade had a heightened sense of the aesthetic: Gilded ropes, golden chains, shiny locks, and no key to free the enraptured

7.         BEDTIME

An homage to Salvador Dali.  In the surrealistic time-scape of the bed, the clock goes soft and dreams of  fantasy  are surveyed by four eyed feet 

8.         BED OF NAILS        

Manicured to perfection, this "handy woman” wields silver hammers, plants a nail and tightens a screw with fingers of gold 

9.         FLAGRANT DELIT

A French legal term for being caught in the act of marital treachery.  A "photo opportunity" between satin sheets, French lace and a garter belt worthy of a Can Can dancer

BEDPOST

A post card for the folks at home: Greetings from the Gold Coast of Miami Beach where kitsch is chic and sunsets are legendary

 11.       CANAPE LIT

The perfect Latin lover's   accompaniment to cocktails - hors d'oeuvres in bed, a toast to the hostess, and finger licking treats  

12.       BEDCLOTHES

The latest in fashion trends for the bed has us “dressing” it for the occasion.  What better place to pin our intimate lives than on a clothes line

 13.       BEDAZZLED

A treasure chest of baubles, bangles and beads, dazzling the most jaded of eyes

14.       FLOUR BED (not flowerbed)

A family recipe, the finest of flowering fruits: an apple tart, sheets of dough rolled thin for a double crust, a culinary use for the meatier part of those apples from Eden 

15.       MAKE UP THE BED

A touch of powder, some rouge, a dab of perfume, a bed made up for a Vanity Fair belle whose hands never tucked in a sheet, with the hot line call       

16.       HOSPITAL BED

An homage to Joseph Beuys, the minimalist version of a maxi-moment, life and death reduced to a concept

 17        BED CHECK

Advice to the money conscious: Bank on Beds, they won't go out of style. Put your money in the mattress and earn interest on your bed time  

18.       BED AND BOARD

The "Do it yourself kit" for making it in bed: Two planks, a saw, a screw or two , and a touch of fantasy 

19.       SOFT BED - Homage to Claes Oldenburg

          Mattress ticking hand sewn  from head to foot to assure a soft bed  

20.       CORNCRIB

The harvest is in, the corn is cribbed, the baby is bedded and wide-eyed Lucy waits for play 

21.       RAVIE AU LIT (Pronounced Ravioli) 

In the arms of an Italian lover, ”ravished in bed” means minced meat, rolled between two sheets and the sauce is “a piacere” 

22.       BED = PALETTE

All dreams should be in Technicolor, and with a touch of imagination, a shapely plank of wood becomes a rainbow palette of bed-visions 

23.       BEDROLL

No camper should be without one: preferably a foot long on a French baguette, overstuffed with ham and cheese, lettuce and tomato, heavy on the mayonnaise - the perfect snack for bedtime appetites 

24.       BRASS BED

Strike up the band, toot those horns, pull out the sheet music and you’re in bed for a song

 25.       MURPHY BED

An homage to Dan Quayle and Murphy Brown’s baby: When you are in the "Outs", and even flag waving doesn’t hide the dirty linen on TV, temperance becomes the cue card

            As for all newborns, this requires the proper bedding

            Dock on Gilligan’s Island and bedding lobsters depends on lobsters bedding 

28.       BEDROCK

Homage to Fred Flintstone - Hand hewn logs, the horns of a mastodon, a bedrock blanket, and Jurassic bedmates attest to the ancestral origins of the bed 

29.       FOOT OF THE BED

Homage to Gulliver - No French cafe worthy of its name is without "Baby Foot", a game of table soccer that reestablishes the rights of Lilliputians to bring in the winning goal 

30.       OCEAN BED

Beware your choice of sheets - that 1960's version from Fieldcrest becomes three dimensional when dreams are afloat 

31.       CAST IRON BED  

            A sure way to avoid a wrinkle in bed, bring something iron

32.      Mini-ALPHABED

            A lower-case  love letter from bed      

33.       DOGGIE BED

Fido never had it bedder - it’s a dog’s dream bed       

34.       QUEEN’S BED

Destined for the People’s Princess, an homage to regality and the setting for love’s finality 

35.       DEATH BED

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo survived a near fatal accident and painted  her way to prosperity from her bed, with the motto “Vive la Muerte”

 36        BED TIME STORY

Mother Goose has tucked in more people than we know - with dreams of Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory and  time for one last story

The sheets are cold, the head rest needs a pharmacy, and pulses are racing - take two aspirins and go to bed

 38.       BED HEAD

            Homage to Andy Warhol - a “wigged” way to fame and fortune 

39.       ARMY BED

            Military might needs respite - an army never sleeps 

40.       BED OF CORAL

Sand in the sheets and the sound of the sea - seduced by underwater beauty 

41.       CLAM BED

When you’re “toast” from champagne and stuffed from the royal seafood platter, clam, up and go to bed, on an ice pack 

42.       HOLLYWOOD BED

Always round, satin and kitsch, stardom is evidenced by the marquee, your name in concrete on Grumman’s sidewalk, and your red phone for studio calls 

43.       BEDSPRING

An homage to Botticelli’s “Primavera”, la “bed” springs forward to lush vegetation in a bucolic setting 

44.       PLANT BED

A chenille spread turned labyrinthic  hedges “a la Notre” gardening,

where  XVIIIth Century French romance is a frolic in the hedges 

45.       A BED OF LETTUCE

If Arcimboldo had interpreted the bed, his vegetable garden would have yielded a harvest of asparagus, mushrooms, and pea pods and of course, leafy lettuce 

46.       DAY BED

The portrait of Madame Recamier by Ingres is the day bed in it most well known artistic image
