ANA TATYA NERI
BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1985 in Jalisco, Mexico to Mexican/Canadian Parents, and later adopted by an Italian Father.
Started painting at the age of eight, studying under the tutelage of artists, first from New York and Boston and later studied at the University of British Columbia, Canada. There her Art teachers were varied: Cuban, American, Canadian, Venezuelan, Italian, French-Canadian. While in Canada she dabbled in photography and industrial design. She also experimented in the culinary arts.
She has many passions and continues to study interior design, culinary, music and languages. As a young girl, she was immersed in crafts, music, and sports. She is inspired by multiple cultures with Mexican, Italian, French and German roots and continues to learn through travel. In 2008, UBC obtained 3 of her works for their permanent collection.
Ana Tatya’s work focuses primarily on the non-existent, imaginary and imperfect. As an expressionist/impressionist artist she uses the blank canvases as a way to express herself in the moment through the manipulation of the paint and canvas. Landscapes begin as abstract and begin to take form as the different layers of the painting unfold. Faces and bodies start much in the same way but focus on the imperfect nature of the human form. Every line is perfectly imperfect, and spontaneous. No one line will ever express the same feeling or take the same form. Ana Tatya is very tactile with her paintings as she feels she can interact with layers, touch and feel the imperfections that the medium creates.
Layer upon layer you can see and feel the paintings unfold. Interact with color, line, and texture on a 2 dimensional surface. Color becomes important, as well as unimportant, as the color can start in depicting the beginning of emotion, but in the end expresses a rainbow of emotions. The lines express not only imperfections but movement, some are representative of a specific movement, of projection, or instability. Line and color are emotive, and depictive of a moment in time, to some it can depict a sense of erraticism, to others a sense of stillness.
Layers and Transparencies are very important and prominent in Ana Tatya’s work, as they give a semblance of History, a sense of where the feeling and emotion comes from. They give a history of progression of the pieces, as much of emotion as it does about the artist state, making each piece a time piece. Each layer is present on all levels of the work through layered transparency. One can see each layer and witness how each of the following layers interacts with and changes the previous layers.
